Ergonomic DSE Assessments
What is an ergonomic/DSE assessment?
This service allows for an in-depth assessment of an employee's workstation to be undertaken, and an evidence based report to be provided following, which offers advice on specific adjustments that the employee would require to support them and their health condition within the workplace.
What does the assessment entail?
The assessment involves a comprehensive examination of an individual's desk, chair, desktop equipment, lighting and working environment. The Occupational health clinician would be required to attend onsite, or alternatively a video based assessment can be provided with instruction.
Why would this be required?
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identifies that:
If workers use display screen equipment (DSE) daily, as part of their normal work, continuously for an hour or more, employers must do a workstation assessment.
Employers should look at:
- the whole workstation, including equipment, furniture, and work conditions
- the job being done
- any special requirements of a member of staff, for example a user with a disability
Where there are risks, they should take steps to reduce them.
Employers must also do an assessment when:
- a new workstation is set up
- a new user starts work
- a change is made to an existing workstation or the way it's used
- users complain of pain or discomfort

What happens after the assessment?
A comprehensive report is provided to the business and the employee, identifying the required areas of change, and appropriate advice on steps to be taken to achieve a safe workstation. This report will be provided within 24 - 48 hours of the assessment.
