Health Surveillance

What is health surveillance?
“Health surveillance is putting in place systematic, regular and appropriate procedures to detect early signs of work-related ill health and then acting upon the results. The aim is to identify and protect workers at increased risk and to check the long term effectiveness of measures to control risks to health…. Health surveillance is required by Section 22 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.” (Health & Safety Authority, Ireland)
What will my appointment entail?
During your appointment, the occupational health advisor will complete a medical questionnaire with you. Depending on your job role, specific tests may be conducted, including audiometry (hearing test), spirometry (breathing test), skin assessment, height and weight measurement, blood pressure check, and vision test.
What will happen with the test results from health surveillance?
Your specific information will be stored confidentially by Concept Occupational Health. A fitness report will be shared with your employer, including basic details such as your name, department, job role, and the outcome (medically fit, medically unfit, or more information required).
What is the process if my results are outside normal ranges?
Depending on your role and with your consent, advice may be provided to your employer regarding temporary adjustments to your duties. This will give you the opportunity to consult your GP or another medical specialist for further clinical investigation or intervention. You will also receive a letter for your GP or specialist explaining the need for additional clinical support. A follow-up appointment with Concept Occupational Health will then be scheduled.
How often is health surveillance undertaken?
Health Surveillance is typically an annual programme, though the specific tests required each year may vary based on HSA/HSE recall guidelines.
